Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I send my kids to the Library while I’m in class?
The College Library Staff are here to provide research help and services to College staff and students. We cannot provide supervision of the materials or websites your children view, or supervise their behaviour. Therefore, all minors must be accompanied by at least one responsible adult when in the Library.
Can I watch videos in the Library?
Yes. The Library has the Cooperative Learning Centre equipped with a TV and DVD/VHS player. Keep in mind the Centre is open to all students and there may be other people using the same space. No booking is required to use this room.
Is the Library wheelchair accessible?
Yes. Almost all areas of the Library are wheelchair accessible. There is space between aisles to navigate and tables in a variety of heights. If further assistance is necessary, please speak to the Library Staff.
Why can’t I take out magazines and journals from the Library?
Periodicals are expensive, in high demand, and made of flimsy material. For these reasons, it is regular policy for academic libraries not to loan periodicals.
I study in a community campus and I almost never come to Whitehorse. How can I use the Library materials?
You can request a library card from your community by using this form. Once your account is all set up, you can borrow Library books by filling the Interlibrary Loan Request Form. We send the required materials to your campus. You can also use the Online Databases from home by clicking on the Remote Access Link.
Why can’t I eat my supper in the Library?
For two major reasons. Firstly, food leaves crumbs which attracts unwanted visitors like vermin and insects. Secondly, accidents happen and Library materials can easily be ruined. Beverages and small snacks are allowed, except near the computers. This policy does not apply to the Computer Lab located in the Library.
Why can’t I use my cell phone in the Library?
The Library is meant for studying and research, which requires relative quiet. Out of courtesy for your fellow patrons, we ask that you take your calls outside of the Library.
Why can’t I use the Library’s 8 Research Computers for emailing, chatting, downloading, etc.?
The Library has only 8 computers available for research and they are in high demand. If you want to email, chat, or download, please do so at home or in the college computer labs.
My Instructor isn’t on campus and I want to hand in an assignment. Why won’t the Library Staff accept my assignment?
Library Staff cannot guarantee that the assignment will get to your Instructor. Instead, talk to your Instructor about appropriate drop off locations, like the main office for your department.
Why can’t my students write their exam in the Library?
Library Staff may not serve as Exam Proctors unless designated so by the College Registrar by prior arrangement. Contact the Registration and Admissions Office for assistance in this matter.
Where can I leave a message for my friend?
You can leave a message for your friend at College Reception (867-668-8800) and your friend can retrieve his/her message from the message bulletin board.
